Mary (Gyba) Stanek, a longtime resident of Hill Street in Waterbury’s North End, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2016 at the Southington Care Center in Southington. She was 95.
She was born October 4, 1921, in Ansonia, the daughter of the late Peter and Rose (Hydko) Gyba. Her family moved to New Haven when she was a child and later moved to Waterbury.
Mrs. Stanek graduated from Crosby High School in 1938 and the Perry School of Business in Waterbury in 1940. There she met John Stanek, whom she married in 1941.
During World War II, Mrs. Stanek worked at the American Brass Co. as a secretary while her husband served in the Army in Europe.
Later, she worked at The Northern Connecticut Agency on Aging in Waterbury. She also worked for CVS in downtown Waterbury.
She and her husband moved to Southington 20 years ago. Her husband died in 1999. Her son Dennis died in 2007.
Mrs. Stanek was an avid reader. She enjoyed cooking, especially Russian delicacies, baking, playing cards, and dancing the polka with her husband.
She was a longtime member of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Waterbury.
She is survived by a son, Donald, of Easton, Pennsylvania; a brother, William Gyba of Chicago; four grandchildren, Dennis and his wife, Jeanette, OF Farmington; Kristen Birmingham and husband Thomas of Plantsville, CT; Kenneth and his wife, Margaret, of Maplewood, New Jersey; and Michelle Stanek and husband, Tommy Martin, of New York, New York; and 6 great-grandchildren, Thomas Birmingham, Brandon Birmingham, Kayla Birmingham, Chase Stanek, Tatum Stanek, and Sadie Stanek.
A funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. with a Parastas service at 4 p.m. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Orthodox Cemetery, Stillson Rd., Waterbury.
