Doug Hageman

By JEN CARDINES

STAFF WRITER

Douglas Hageman, a longtime Southington resident and local official, died on the morning of July 28 at age 66. Hageman lived in town for over four decades and was active in the community through many facets.

He was a former member of the Republican State Central Committee, the Connecticut Regional Planning Board (which has since dissolved and is run under the Capital Regional Council of Governments) and a board chairman for the Southington Chamber of Commerce. Hageman was also a former Zoning Board of Appeals chair and was on the ZBA throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Hageman was also a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Friendship Lodge in Southington, and a member of the Elks Lodge.

Observer editions editor Mike Chaiken, who covered Southington during Hageman’s tenure, called the politician his “eyes and ears” of the town.

“Hageman was a bit of a gad fly, but he always had the best interest of Southington at heart,” Chaiken said. “As Queen Street built up, he made sure that from the vantage of the ZBA, Southington would avoid looking like Disneyland.”

Though Hageman was a staunch Republican, he didn’t let party affiliation interrupt a longstanding friendship with former Democratic town councilor Art Secondo.

“We never put that in the middle of things,” said Secondo, who last saw Hageman when they went out for coffee two weeks ago. He said that Hageman even helped promote him for his last two council terms.

“Doug was well-versed in government,” Secondo said. “He really cared about Southington and knew what went on behind the scenes.”

A memorial service was held on Tuesday Aug. 8 at Bethany Covenant Church. Memorial donations may be made to Bethany Covenant Church to support Camperships, 785 Mill St., Berlin, CT 06037.

Obituary: Sheila Hamilton Rowland

Sheila Hamilton Rowland (nee Schmidt), 92, died Tuesday, August 22nd at the Residence at Shelburne Bay in Shelburne, Vermont.

Born in Geneva, NY on October 21, 1924, to Marguerite and Franklin Schmidt, Sheila grew up with her mom, her step-father Bill Galvin, sister Joyce, Aunt Isabel and Uncle Charlie in Ithaca, Bound Brook, NJ and White Plains, NY where she graduated from White Plains High School.  She went off to college in 1943 discovering her “Camelot” in Middlebury College. After 3 years of accelerated study due to the war, and many antics with her best friend of now 75 years, Cam (Joan) Shaw, she graduated in 1946.  Sheila stayed on in Middlebury working for the food service at the college where she met Jack Hamilton in November of 1947 when he attended on the GI Bill.  They fell in love and were married (after Jack asked permission from Cam saying “I have more fun with Sheila than a barrel of monkeys!”) on June 12, 1948.

Sheila and Jack started their family in Chester, Vermont with the birth of son Michael (wife Daria Burns).  Jack then took a job with the International Silver Company which would start a process of regular moves to Ohio, Illinois and back to Ohio before they landed permanently in Southington, CT.  By then they had 2 more boys, David and Greg (wife Mary Beth) and in Southington had their last child, Mary.  Sheila was a long time, devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Southington, and was active in the League of Women Voters and the Red Cross.  She went back to work in 1973 eventually becoming Clinical Coordinator at Wheeler Clinic, a therapeutic clinic for children and families in Farmington, CT.  She loved this work and was beloved by the staff and clients alike.

Jack died suddenly in 1974 leaving Sheila to lead the family solo. She began that journey by taking the whole family on a trip to England, the start of a love of European travel that would take her to Paris, Italy, Provence, Switzerland and beyond.

Eight years after Jack’s death, Sheila married long time family friend Bill Rowland doubling her then adult family with Bill’s kids Jim, Jean, Billy and Mickey.  Sheila and Bill filled their days with travel, gardens (Sheila), woodworking (Bill), and a family-gathering vacation home in New Hampshire.  They moved to Plattsburgh, NY in 2001 to be closer to Mary (and then husband John Homer) and Greg.

Sheila returned to her Camelot in 2012 moving to the Lodge at Otter Creek in Middlebury.  She loved drives into town and up to the campus on the hill to reminisce about her days there.

Sheila was funny, intelligent, opinionated, an extraordinary cook, a voracious reader, had a terrible singing voice (she’d be the first to tell you), a lover of cats, rabbits, flowers and Italian food.  She was a passionate Francophile, tennis player, an early practicer of yoga and a collector of antiques.  She was a wonderful friend and mother and she will be sorely missed.

Predeceased by second husband Bill, she leaves her own and Bill’s kids and grandchildren: Megan, Emma, Jack, Will, Lily, Isabel, Maggie, Sam, Adam and Mircea on the Hamilton side and Chandler, Molly, Billy, Alice, Jamie and Carol on the Rowland side.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Residence at Shelburne Bay especially Brandon, Jessica, Dragana, Bifoko, Lindsey, Marie-Claire, Christian, Samuel, Anet, Suki, and nurses Aimee, Molly and Jeanine.  We would also like to thank the staff at Bayada Hospice, especially Mel and Martha.  And a final thanks to Dr. Frank Landry who consistently had mom’s back.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Heifer International at www.heifer.org.

Jacqueline Robinson: knitter, bingo playing, cookbook collector, and apple pie baking grandma died on August 24. 2017.

Jackie was born on April 24, 1945 to John Elliott and Anne Rae Elliott.  She grew up on Long Island, married, and had two children.  As a stay at home mom, she was dedicated to her family.  In 1985, she settled in Southington where she discovered her love of golf, and later, the fun of knitting with friends.  She enjoyed baking, going out to eat, and going to Calendar House.  She was always the first in line at her grandchildren’s events.

In the last few days of her life, she was surrounded by family, friends, and her dog Maggie.  She listened to Colorado stories from her son, Chris, recalled family trips to Disney and Hawaii, and listened to music sung by her favorite artists: Reilly and Connor Lincavicks, and the King, Elvis Presley.  She knew she was loved and quietly and peacefully passed. With Jackie’s passing, stock in QVC and Coke a Cola will definitely plummet.  Holidays will never be the same without her special baked treats.

Jackie was predeceased by her parents and sister, Sharon Meyer of Harkers Island, NC.  Jackie will be remembered by her children, Deborah Lincavicks and her husband Robert Lincavicks of Southington and Christopher-John Robinson of Telluride, Co.  She will also be remembered by her grandchildren, Reilly and Connor Lincavicks.

The family would like to acknowledge the spectacular care she received on 5th Floor North in New Britain General Hospital.  The doctors, nurses, residents, and aids made the last few days full of hugs, dancing, and most importantly dignity.  We would also like to thank Pam Brown for her care, comfort, and support throughout these difficult weeks.

Jackie’s family will receive family and friends at Della Vecchia Funeral Home, Southington, on Friday, September 1 from 5 to 7 pm.  A mass celebrating Jackie’s life will be on Saturday, September 2 at 11:00 am. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church – 145 Main St. Southington.  Interment will follow at the St. Paul Memorial Garden following the service.

Memorial donations can be made in her honor to Southington Fire Department, 310 N. Main Street, or The Calendar House, 388 Pleasant Street.
