Augustine “Augie” Edward Fernandes, 85, of Florida, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016 at home with his family at his side. He was the beloved husband of Elvira “Bolly” (Marinelli) Fernandes for over 56 years.
Augie was born in Mount Vernon, NY on September 4, 1930 son of the late Jose and Maria (Pinto) Fernandes. He was a Paratrooper in the US Army during the Korean War in the 82nd Airborne Division. In the 50’s Augie played Minor League Baseball for the St. Loius Cardinals. He and Bolly lived in Waterbury until 1971, then moved to Southington where they raised their family. Augie retired from Holo-Krome as a Header Machinist and soon after moved to Florida. While living in Southington, he was an active member of St. Dominic Church and the Southington Elks.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Joseph Fernandes and wife Patricia, Dina DeGumbia and husband David all of Southington, and Edward Fernandes and wife Eileen of Florida, a daughter-in-law Deborah Fernandes, 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, along with several nieces and nephews.
Augie was predeceased by a son Steven Augustine Fernandes, a brother Vincent Fernandes, and a sister Rosalina Mazzei.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 am on Saturday, November 5, 2015 at St. Dominic Church, 1050 Flanders Road, Southington. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington is assisting the family with arrangements.
