Obituary: Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (McAllister) Lewis, 92

Elizabeth “Betty” (McAllister) Lewis, 92, passed away on February 10, 2017at the Cheshire Regional Rehabilitation Center.

Betty was born on September 5, 1924 to her parents, the late Howard and Casilda (Brahem) McAllister. She grew up in the Buffalo, NY area and moved to Southington in 1967.

For several decades, she could be found searching for the perfect antique or piece of jewelry at tag sales and flea markets. Saturday mornings were spent “tagging” with dear friends. Later, she went into the antique business selling at several flea markets in the area. She continued working until she was 90 years old.

Betty is survived by she leaves behind a loving son, James Lewis of Southington, granddaughter Jennifer Amalfa of Middletown, her husband Tim and their daughters, Skye and Morgan. She also leaves behind her step-daughter, Sally Repec and her husband Joe, their children and grandchildren Donald, Joey, Donna, Heather, Jamie and Jillian; a sister Shirley Westenfield of Buffalo, NY as well as several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lewis and four brothers.

Obituary: Cecil Morin Michaud, 65

Cecile Morin Michaud, 65, beloved wife of Gaspard Michaud passed away peacefully at Bristol Hospital with her loved ones by her side on Friday Feb 10, 2017. Cecile was born in Lewiston Maine on July 6, 1951 to the late Wilfred and Blanche (Caron) Morin.

Cecile leaves behind her husband and two sons David and Jeffrey. Cecile was a devoted grandmother to her grandsons Devin and Daniel.  Cecile also leaves her brother Phillippe Morin, sisters Noella Morin and Louise Hilton and several nieces and nephews. Cecile was predeceased by her sister Yvette Mason and brother Emile Morin.

Cecile was a graduate of Bristol Central High School, worked at Bristol Hospital, Superior Electric and Whitman Controls Corp.

Even through the challenges of her illness Cecile continued to work and take sancuary in her beautiful garden.

Obituary: Hazel E. Heap, 82

Hazel E. Heap, 82, of Southington, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017. She was the wife of the late Lewis Heap, M.D. She is survived by her daughter, Francesca Heap and her son-in-law, Alan Conklin, of Plainville; daughter, Rosemary; and her cherished granddaughter, Sarah Heap-Crosby, of Bristol. She also leaves her nephews, Toby and Ivan, and her beloved cat, Keebler. She was predeceased by her daughter, Miranda Elizabeth Heap, and her brother, Howard.

Mrs. Heap was born in Enfield, England, daughter of the late Jack and Eva. She received a Master’s in Science from Quinnipiac University and had retired from her work as a medical technologist at the practice now known as CT Kidney and Hypertension Specialists.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 at 12:30 pm at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St.Southington. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Obituary: John Sosnowski, 86

John Sosnowski, 86, formerly of Waterbury, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017.  He was the devoted husband of Lucille (Kiermont) Sosnowski.

John was born in Biakystok, Poland on January 2, 1931. He came to the US in the 1960’s and worked for Fleisher Finishing and Truelove & Maclean in Waterbury until his retirement.  He was a faithful communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Waterbury.  He helped the church as a lector, greeter and handyman till his illness progressed.  He would go to New Britain every Friday to get the Polish paper for the church community.  He was a St. Joseph’s Medal Recipient.  He would visit anyone who was sick or needed assistance every morning until he couldn’t drive.

In addition to his wife of 53 years he is survived by his daughter Judith Miller and husband Ronald, with whom he resided in Southington, his grandchildren Sarah and Megan Miller.  He also leaves his sisters Regina and Danuta of Poland, his cousin Dzitka Floryon of Poland, nephew Kurt Kiermont, niece Diane Kiermont and sister-in-law Lydia Kiermont.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 10:30 am at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St. Plantsville.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.  There are no calling hours.

Obituary: Melvin W. Rose, 80

Melvin W. Rose, 80, of Southington, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the Summit at Plantsville. He had been the loving husband of Mary “Jean” (Bowen) Rose for 60 years.

Born on June 22, 1936 in Baltimore, MD to the late Mack and Marie (Doehring) Rose, he had been a longtime Southington resident.

Melvin proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He retired from Aetna Life and Casualty where he worked as an administrator in the Medicare Division for over 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the Maryland Law Enforcement Officers’ Association and a former member of Concordia Lodge no. 13, A.F. & A.M. Baltimore, MD, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and the A.A.O.N.M.S – Boumi Temple, Baltimore, MD.  Melvin was also a team co-captain with the Southington Relay for Life for several years.

In addition to his wife Jean, he is survived by two daughters: Patricia Havanec and her husband Kevin of Prospect and Penny Charamut and her husband Doug of Southington and 9 grandchildren: Alexandra Bergstrom and her fiancé Ryan Lowe; Zachary Bergstrom; Kelsey Evans and her husband David; Ryan Havanec and his wife Amelia, Zachary Havanec, Ryan, Brendan, Jacquelyn and Danielle Charamut and 3 great-grandsons: Jaxton and Phoenix Evans and Pace Havanec. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, William Bowen and his wife Margaret of Fallston, MD and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Joseph “Jody” D. Grigerek, 69, of the Plantsville section of Southington, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the HOCC at Bradley. He was the loving husband of Lisa (Bisi) Grigerek for 40 years.

Born October 26, 1947 in Southington to the late Joseph and Pauline (Forsyth) Grigerek, he had been a lifelong Southington resident.

Jody worked as a sprinkler fitter in the fire protection industry for many years.

In addition to his beloved wife Lisa, he is survived by his sister Kathy Breakfield, aunt Julia Grigerek, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Laura and Robert Beeman of Meriden and Joseph and Kathleen Bisi of Hillsdale, NJ and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Martin J. Scanlon Jr., 90, of the Plantsville section of Southington passed away on Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Veterans Home and Hospital in Rocky Hill. He was the husband of the late Sally (Tagg) Scanlon.

Born January 9, 1927 in Waterbury he was the son of the late Martin J. Sr. and Margorie (Collins) Scanlon.

Marty was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He retired as a customer service manager for Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company in Naugatuck.

He was a member of the St. Aloysius Holy Name Society, American Legion, Southington Band Backers, and the Boy Scouts.

Marty is survived by his children Maureen Stangl of Bristol, Kevin Scanlon and his wife Kristen of West Haven, Meg Scanlon and her fiancé Allen Moore of Southington, Eileen Kochol and her husband David of Southington and Vinny Carvalho of Rhode Island. Also, two sisters Patricia Palombo (Art) of Waterbury, Carol Lombardi (Jim), of Waterbury, a sister in law Kathleen Scanlon of Watertown, his 14 cherished grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Kathleen (Kate) Scanlon Carvalho and brother William (Bill) Scanlon

Funeral services will be held Monday February 27 at 9:15 am at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Southington to St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St. Plantsville for a Mass at 10 am followed by a burial with military honors at St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday 3 pm – 5 pm.

John A. Sokolnicki, 72, of Madison passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, February 20, 2017 at St. Raphael’s Hospital. He was the loving husband of Marcia (Giles) Sokolnicki for 39 years.

Born April 16, 1944 in Wilkes-Barre, PA to the late Leo S. and Stasia (Beldowicz) Sokolnicki, he had been a longtime Madison resident.

John graduated from Fairfield Prep and went on to UCONN where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist at Bradley Memorial Hospital and then at the family business, Centennial Plaza Pharmacy in Meriden, retiring in 1998. John loved books, music and sports, and spending time with his family and his many friends.

In addition to his wife Marcia, John is survived by a brother Leo Paul Sokolnicki and his wife Kathleen of Middletown, CT; his mother-in-law, Toni Giles Height of Southington; his brother-in-law, Tom Giles and his wife Janine of Hadley, MA; his sister-in-law, Luanne Giles Topper and her husband Michael of Hudson, NH and several nieces and nephews.

Obituary: Phyllis Mary Higginston Magoon, 75

Phyllis Mary Higginston Magoon, 75, of Gill, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, February 17, 2017.

She was born on July 27, 1941 in Waterbury, CT, the daughter of the late Dorothy E. and William Higginston. Phyllis was known for her big, welcoming smile and her kind, inspiring words to whomever might cross her path. She graduated from Southington High School in Southington, CT, as a member of the class of 1959. She also graduated from Greenfield Community College with an Associate Degree in Management and remained an advocate for GCC. She then went on to get her Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from North Adams State College.

She began her career in the Purchasing Department of Connecticut Light & Power in Berlin, CT in 1960. She went on to work at The Northfield Mountain Recreation Center doing energy tours and lectures, a legacy her daughter, Valerie Magoon, would continue. In 1991, after starting her career as a secretary, Phyllis was named Manager of District Business Services at Western Massachusetts Electric Company. Three years later she was promoted to Hadley General Manager and then three years after that, in 1997, she was promoted again to Springfield General Manager. In 2003, she was promoted yet again to The Director of External Relations at Western Massachusetts Electric Company, a position she would retire from in 2006, after 46 years of service with the company.

Throughout her career she served on many boards, such as the Finance Board in Gill, the Board of Directors for the Pioneer Valley County League, the Board of Incorporators for the United Way of Franklin County, the Regional Employment Board of Hamden County, and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, the Greenfield Community College Foundation, the Connecticut River Watershed Council State Advisory Committee, and the Franklin/Hampshire Private Industry Council Regional Employment Board. She won many awards throughout her 46 year career, namely the honorable “Year 2000 Businesswoman of Distinction Award” from the Pioneer Valley Girl Scout Council. She was, however, most proud of her “2001 Parent of the Year Award” from Salve Regina University, which honored her unparalleled commitment to her daughter, Valerie.

She is survived by her daughter and best friend, Valerie Magoon of Gill, her grand-dog, Notorious, and her two grand-horses, Pistol and Cash as well as her sister Maureen DeBishop, Maureen’s husband Robert DeBishop, and two nieces, Karen DeBishop and Susan Kloss, all of CT. She is also survived by her two horses whom she loved, cherished and doted on daily- Daisy May and Mr. “Bo” Bojangles.

Phyllis will be remembered by her many friends and associates as a good listener, always eager to offer a pearl of wisdom. She was a true trailblazer, never willing to take no for an answer, always forging ahead with vim and vigor. She loved animals even more than people and especially cherished her time with her grand-dog Notorious as well as with her horses Daisy and Bo. She will be missed beyond measure.

Funeral services will be held Saturday 2-25-17 at 9:15am from the Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. Greenfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am at Blessed Sacrament Church. Calling hours will be Friday 2-24-17 from 5-7pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place on Monday 2-27-17 at 11am at St. Thomas Cemetery in Southington, CT.

Laurie Ahearn, 56, of the Plantsville section of Southington, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, February 22, 2017.

Born Aug. 12, 1960 in Southington to the late John and Jeannine (Dupuis) Ahearn, she had been a longtime Southington resident.

Laurie was generous, charismatic, and intelligent.  She was a hard-working single mother and a doting grandmother.  When she wasn’t busy spoiling her family, you could find her with a crochet hook in her hand.  She will be remembered for her witty humor, fun-loving smile and compassionate heart.

She is survived by her 4 children: Amanda Pratte and her husband Anthony of Plantsville; Bridget Pratt of Meriden; Chloe Pratt and Daniel Parks, both of Plantsville and 5 grandchildren: Elyssa, Fletcher, Gunner, Harley and Iselie, and baby Jace on the way. She is also survived by 5 siblings: Tammy Corriveau and her husband Dale of Plainville; Michael Ahearn and his wife Debra of Wausau, WI; Jeannine Hardy of Brooklin, ME; Timothy Ahearn and his wife Renee of Wausau, WI and Megin Roper and her husband Larry of Wausau, WI and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Laurie’s life will be held at 7p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017 at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. Obituary: Rose Marie Johnson, 86

Rose Marie Johnson, 86, of Southington, passed away on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017 at the Cheshire Regional Rehab. She was the wife of the late Lewis Johnson.

She was born in Dednam, MA the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Carpenito) Dolan.  Rose played the piano and organ for St. Dominic Church she was instrumental in the early stages of the Church playing at the schools before the church was even built. She also taught religion classes at St. Dominic. She loved to sew and she had made many costumes for the school plays at Thalberg School.

She is survived by her two sons Paul Johnson and his wife Lyn and Michael Johnson and his wife Heidi all of Southington, four grandchildren, Ashley, Lynsey, Stephen and Amber.  Rose also leaves her sister Cecelia Hamel of MA. She was predeceased by a sister Marion Dolan and a brother Daniel Dolan.

Donald G. Graves, 73, of the Plantsville section of Southington, passed away on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017. He was the husband of the late Diane (Kennedy) Graves.

Donald was born on March 15, 1943 in Middletown the son of the late Gustave and Margaret (Crocker) Graves. He was a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. Prior to his retirement he spent his career in the trucking industry including a lengthy tenure at E.J. Davis Trucking Co. in North Haven.

Donald was a member of the First Baptist Church and a former Deacon of the church. He had been a member of the VFW and the American Legion Post #72.

He is survived by his son Thomas Donald Graves of Plantsville, 2 sisters Sonja and her husband Robert Langer of Clinton and Shirley Goodspeed of Old Saybrook along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 10:15 am from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to the First Baptist Church, 581 Meriden Ave. Southington at 11 am. Burial will be at Wonx Spring Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 5-7 pm

Jean Keir, 90, of Southington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at the Southington Care Center.

Jean was born on December 14, 1926 in Lynn, MA to the late James and Mary (Tyrie) Keir and had been a longtime Southington resident. She worked as an underwriter at The Hartford, retiring after 25 years of service.

Jean is survived by her nephew, James Hennessey of Southington and niece, Joan Irwin and her husband Todd of Georgia, VT; one great-niece, Katie Hennessey McDonald and her husband Ryan; two great-nephews, Matthew Hennessey and Michael Irwin and his wife, Katelyn; and her great-grand nieces and nephews; Brody, Ashton, Quinlynn, Isaac and Silas. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Hennessey.

Obituary: Richard J. Hayner, 86

Richard J. Hayner, beloved husband of the late Gracemarie (Harley) Hayner, and son of the late Clifford Hayner and Marion (File) Hayner, passed away on Monday,  February 27, 2017 at the age of 86. He was born and grew up in Brunswick, NY and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with a BSEE. He has been retired from Northeast Utilities for over 26 years. During his retirement, he and Gracemarie volunteered for the Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity, helping build houses for over 10 years.

Richard met his wife-to-be on a blind date arranged by mutual friends, the late Jean and Paul Berger, where they went to dinner and dancing. They continued to dance their way through life together for the next 58 years doing square dancing, country western, polka, Cajun, swing and ballroom. Richard danced multiple times per week until just days before his passing. A special dancing memory they shared, was dancing the Blue Danube Waltz to the music of a Romanian band on a Bulgarian boat cruising the Blue Danube River between Vienna and Budapest.

Richard leaves behind three devoted children: Anne E. Hayner of North Attleboro, MA; Mark R. Hayner and his wife Cathleen (Dowler) Hayner of Bedford, NH; John C. Hayner and his wife Laura (Watts) Hayner of Bristol, CT; five remarkable grandchildren: Katherine (Hayner) Bourque, and her husband, Nicholas Bourque, Kristina Hayner, Nicole Hayner, Jason Dobbins, Justin Dobbins; one adored great grandchild, Jaime Jae Dobbins; his sister, Carol (Hayner) Edwards and her husband David of Cohoes, NY; his nephew, Christopher Edwards, his niece Mary Ann Rifenberick and her husband Chad and his grand-niece, Madison.  He was predeceased by his brother, Roger Hayner.

Obituary: Anthony Richards, 90

Anthony Richards, 90 of Southington, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at the Alzheimer’s Resource Center. He was the husband of Ruth (Worchin) Richards. The family would like to personally thank the staff and all involved in the care of Tony’s wellbeing, they were kind, loving, and gentle and the utmost personal care, we thank you dearly.

In addition to his wife Ruth of 66 years he leaves two lovely daughters Kimberly Lynn Rozsa and husband Chris of LA and Lisa Stimson and husband Steve Namoun of NJ; three granddaughters, Mallory, Delaney and Hadley Stimson and a brother Joseph Richards of ME. He was predeceased by a sister Louise Boccia.

Anthony was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WW II with the submarine division.

He retired from GE in Plainville after 36 years of service.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 72, Veteran of Foreign Wars, charter member of the AARP and the Southington Calendar House. He loved wood working and carving.

The funeral will be held on Saturday 12 noon at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be prior to the service starting at 11 a.m.

Obituary: Marcia O’Hala Riccio, 62

Marcia O’Hala Riccio, 62, of Southington, died peacefully on March 4, 2017, after a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Marcia leaves behind her loving husband Robert Riccio and sons Timothy and Matthew. She is also survived by her brother Glen O’Hala and his wife Deborah, her brother Thomas O’Hala and his wife Carol, her sister Susan Butler and her husband Larry, and her sister Patricia Crowley and her husband John. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends will remember Marcia with fondness and love. Marcia is pre-deceased by her parents, Chester and Alice O’Hala.

After graduating from Southington High School and the University of Connecticut, Marcia dedicated her professional career to teaching the students of her hometown. She taught with passion and commitment for 38 years, first at Flanders School and then at Southington High School where she eventually became the chairperson of the Physical Education and Health departments.

Marcia’s loved ones take comfort in knowing that she loved her life. She cherished the summers she spent, at home and on the road, with her husband and sons. She held dear memories of the great times she had with extended family and friends. Marcia spent many happy hours quilting, golfing, gardening, coaching, cooking, listening to music, dining out and traveling. A recent trip to Paris gave Marcia the chance to cross off a long time bucket list item.

Cynthia “Cindy Lou” (Struzinski) Burgess, 56, of Southington, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 2, 2017. She was the loving wife and soulmate of Brian N. Burgess for 37 years.

Born on August 4, 1960 in New Haven to the late Walter E. and Elaine (Doyle) Struzinski, she had been a longtime Southington resident.

Cindy’s love for children, especially babies, led her to work as a doula and aspire to be a midwife. She loved the beach, gardening, holistic remedies and was a champion at being a ready neighbor whenever there was a need. She was especially excited about attending the newly built LDS Temple in Farmington, CT.

In addition to her husband Brian, Cindy is survived by her daughter Faith Emrazian (38) and her husband Aaron of Salt Lake City, Utah and her loving extended family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Cindy’s family would be appreciated.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 750 Meriden-Waterbury Tpke., Southington. Calling hours will be held before the service from 5:30 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. at the church. Burial will be held privately. Mildred (Czapla) Pilarski, 87, passed away on Saturday March 4 2017 at Hartford Hospital. She was the wife of the late Wallace Pilarski.

Mildred was born on Feb. 20, 1930 in Clifton Heights, PA, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Matusz) Czapla.

She is survived by her children, Cynthia Pilarski of Bristol, Cliff Pilarski and wife Lisa of Wolcott, Steven Pilarski and wife Nadine of Terryville, ten grandchildren: Melissa, Janelle, Dylan, Devan, Cameron, Caidan, Analise, Olivia, Julia, Spencer; and one great grandchild, Patrick ; special friends Jan Von Flatern, Nancy Heiser and JoAnn Heiser.

Mildred also leaves a sister Stephanie Dulka of E. Hartford; sister-in-law Betty Czapla of E. Hartford and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Walter Czapla and a brother-in-law Joseph Dulka.

Obituary: Annette Nicole (Miceli) Brown, 55

After a courageous 21-month battle with cancer, Annette Nicole Brown, 55, found peace on March 3, 2017 surrounded by her family. Devoted wife to husband, Peter and loving mother to Emily and Andrew, she touched many lives.

Annette was born in Southington on Nov. 14, 1961 and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in languages. She excelled as a medical sales representative with Johnson & Johnson and later with Schering-Plough. She felt blessed to leave the work force and stay home to raise her children. Annette was an active parishioner at St. Michael’s Church and was a long-time CCD teacher. In addition, she held many leadership positions in the Bedford Public School Teacher/Parent Organization. Annette was active with Bedford TV, a local cable access station.

She was a passionate runner and proudly completed two Boston Marathons. Annette loved boating, the beach and could often be found clamming at the family beach camp on North Beach Island, Chatham. She shared her love of the outdoors with friends and family and a deep sadness is felt with her passing. Annette gave to others without hesitation and was generous with her love. Her smile was medicine for our souls.

In addition to her husband and children, of Bedford, she is survived by her, parents, Joseph and Catherine (Press) Miceli of Southington, CT, her siblings, Christine Day (Scott) of Trumbull, CT, Roz Luongo (Frank) of Suffield, CT, Joseph Miceli (Dawn) of Southington, Elizabeth Miceli of Hoboken, NJ and Catherine Miceli of Washington, DC, also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and close friends.

Visitation at the Bedford Funeral Home on Wed., March 8, from 3:00-8:00 PM. Funeral Mass in St. Michael Church, 90 Concord Rd., Bedford, on Thurs., March 9, at 10 AM.

John “JD” DePizzol, 59, of Louisburg, NC and formerly of Southington, passed away suddenly on Friday March 3, 2017 while visiting his family in Southington.

He was born on July 27, 1957, the son of John DePizzol Sr. and the late Margaret (Hollstein) DePizzol. He was a truck driver and owned and operated a truck with Landstar Trucking. JD loved Harley-Davidson’s motorcycles but most of all he loved his family.

In addition to his father of Plantsville he is survived by his fiancée Rita Bailey and his children Jesse Boehne of Wallingford, Tara DePizzol, Jarrett DePizzol, Shana DePizzol , Tyler and Celina Bailey and grandchildren Lily and Landon Bailey all of Louisburg, NC  as well as his brother Peter DePizzol of Franklin, CT.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 pm at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. Burial and services will be at the convenience of the family.
